Allergy Clinic

The management of chronic and recurrent nasal and sinus disease requires a history and detailed examination of the patient that often includes allergy testing. The Department of Otolaryngology provides allergy testing related to the ear, nose, and throat, along with endoscopic examination and X-rays, to diagnose and treat patients with sinus and nasal abnormalities.

RAST (Radio-Allergo-Sorbent Test), a blood test, and skin testing are routinely used to diagnose specific pollens patients have allergies to. Immunotherapy, or allergy shots, are provided using a methodology that is patient-friendly. Sublingual drops, as a means to test allergic disease, are also provided. The nurses who assist in the testing and treatment of the allergic patient are well trained and provide high quality and excellent care.

The Rhinology and Sinus Surgery program has developed a productive basic science and translational research laboratory, led by Dr. Brad Woodworth, a fellowship-trained sinus surgeon with a strong translational focus on research to improve outcomes in patients suffering from sinusitis and other sinonasal disorders. He has produced over a hundred peer-reviewed publications in these areaa, and has obtained over $2m in research funding for these endeavors, including a prestigious R01 grant from the NIH. Basic research interests of the faculty include dysfunctional sinonasal epithelial ion transport, novel treatment strategies for chronic rhinosinusitis, and tobacco smoke-related effects on the mucociliary apparatus. Clinical research interests of the faculty include outcomes of complicated frontal sinus surgery, novel surgical methods to improve Cystic Fibrosis-related chronic sinusitis, and advanced techniques in skull base repair and tumor removal.
