Xyzal Allergy Review – Forbes Health - Forbes

Xyzal works by blocking H1 histamine receptors, which impede the release of histamine, a chemical in the body that causes allergy symptoms when it's exposed to a foreign agent like pollen or pet dander. Xyzal treats and prevents allergy symptoms in various tissues that have H1 receptors and are affected by allergies. Common symptoms can be a runny nose and itchy, watery eyes or a sore throat.

A report by the Center for Drug Evaluation and Research states that Xyzal is safe and effective for the recommended dose of 2.5 milligrams to 5 milligrams taken orally once daily in the evening (due to the potential drowsy effect it has on consumers).

"This medication is generally well tolerated with minimal side effects, including drowsiness and tiredness," says Dr. James. "Caution needs to be taken when using Xyzal and other medications—this issue should be discussed with a health care provider."

If you think you may benefit from taking Xyzal for allergy symptoms, speak with your doctor about whether it's a good choice for your unique symptoms and medical history.

"It's always recommended that shared decision making between the patient and health care provider be undertaken to make the most informed, safe decision on using this medication," says Dr. James.
Do not use Xyzal if you are breastfeeding, have kidney disease or have ever had an allergic reaction to the medication itself or an antihistamine containing cetirizine.
